April 10, 2010 - Marshalltown, IA - Arts and Children Together harp presentations in
elementary school

Reflections
This past April '10, I was invited by the Arts and Children Together
Committee to present the harp in the elementary schools here in
Marshalltown, Iowa.  The 10 presentations were given over a period of three
days in the 6 public elementary schools.  Some of the presentations were given
to the entire student body at once and some schools split their students into two
groups, depending on the size of the gym.

At each presentation, an overview of the harp was given, including how to pluck
the strings.  A student and I played a simple duet.  Some history was given on
ancient harps and harpers.  I brought in three harps:  my pedal harp, my Celtic
lap harp and my hot blue electric harp rigged up to a synthesizer.  I gave a brief
history on how I happened to start the harp and played a couple of my own
tunes, showing the difference between the sounds of the harps
.  Of course, the
electric harp was a favorite, especially after I switched the sound into a 'star
wars' swoop!

The program was ended with a short 'lecture' on getting busy and doing
something interesting with their time; that turning off the TV and getting to
work was worth it.  It's possible to pick up an instrument and accomplish it - I
am a good example.  There were many questions and much interest.  I felt the
students listened better than I thought they would!

The Marshalltown Arts and Children Together Committee was very generous in
paying me.  I thank them for the opportunity and for their encouragement.
